"The REIT Modernization Act of 1999 (RMA), which went into effect at the beginning of 2001, was heralded by National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts (NAREIT) as "a new milestone in the evolution of REITs." ... REITs were now able to harness their expertise to grow other businesses, capitalizing on their tenant relationships to build, for example, a telecom company, opening up potentially significant new revenue streams for REITs...To find out what specific effect, a year after its enactment, the RMA has proved to have and what substantial lasting benefits it may hold for the REIT industry, Reis's Sam Truitt speaks with David Shulman, managing director and head REIT analyst at Lehman Brothers."
