The Washington area commuting experience -- already one of the worst in the nation -- has deteriorated after the terrorists attacks.

"Until Sept. 11 the Washington area's commute was rated as the fourth worst in the nation. Today, it may be the worst in the nation because of the new snarls created by heightened security at federal facilities across our region...Employers should consider implementing measures that will allow -- and encourage -- employees to explore alternatives to driving alone. Telecommuting, carpooling, use of mass transit and flexible work hours all could help reduce the terrible commutes so many in our region are facing."
