Livability.com complies a list of cities that have strong book store cultures. The list looks at the volume of bookstores in a city and hallmark independent bookstores.
The list also considers a cities social offerings because "there's nothing worse than reading an inspiring novel and having nothing to do after closing the cover."
Traverse City, MI ranks sixth on the list with this description:
"What this city lacks in store numbers (it has three) it more than makes up for in quality. Horizon Books, the local literary claim to fame, is a multistory affair. The Rise and Shine Cafe fills floor one, with a coffee shop up top, and the bookstore sitting snug in between. So while Traverse City may not offer too many options for bookstore seekers, it's got the one, and it does the one well."
Charlotte, NC, Spokane, WA and Coral Gables, FL top the list.
