The rapid increase in the number of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in the Washington region has changed projections about the region's air pollution levels and compromised our ability to meet clean air goals. If the region cannot meet federal health standards for ground-level ozone -- the region's most serious air pollution problem -- by 2005, federal funding for transportation projects could be cut off."
