Governor of Maryland, Parris N. Glendening, is concerned about the destruction of wetlands and is seeking coastal protections.
"The new regulations would be similar to the 'critical areas' legislation that was developed in 1984 to protect the Chesapeake Bay and which in some areas is severe enough to limit tree cutting, administration officials said. The governor said he expected it to be one of the most contentious environmental battles during his administration, as property owners fight efforts to limit what they can do with their land.Glendening has made new regulations on development a cornerstone of his administration, especially his 'smart growth' plans, which regulate suburban sprawl and were hotly contested when first passed by the legislature during his first term."
