"Living on the Edge"
Fourth Annual South Florida Environmental Ethics Conference
FORT LAUDERDALE – The Fourth Annual Florida Environmental Ethics Conference is set for Friday, February 11, 2005 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Fort Lauderdale. The daylong conference is organized by Florida Atlantic University's Department of Urban and Regional Planning and co-sponsored by the University of Miami Ethics Programs, the Miami-Dade Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, and the Florida Bioethics Network.
Entitled "Living on the Edge," the conference invites discussion of the ethical and social challenges of maintaining a balance between South Florida's built and natural environments and the ethical considerations in environmental policy, urban design, and community building. Miami attorney and former state legislator Richard Pettigrew, who chaired the Governor's Commission on a Sustainable South Florida, will give the keynote address.
Southeast Florida's urban area is home to more than 6 million people. Its "edges" are two unique and world-renowned ecosystems: in the west, the Everglades and in the east, the coral reefs and mangroves. This conference will explore the ethical challenges and opportunities of recreating and restoring the connections between the two ecosystems while serving the needs of a growing urban population. Program and other conference information is available at www.fau.edu/environment.
Attendees qualify for 4.5 APA Continuing Professional Development Credits applicable towards American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification. Additionally, continuing legal education (CLE) hours will be applied for.
The conference fee is $45 in advance or $55 at the door and includes continental breakfast, registration, all handout materials and lunch. To register, contact the Broward Center's AutoNation Box Office on-line at www.browardcenter.org or call 954-462-0222 or visit the box office at 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale. Students with ID and Florida Bioethics Network paid members are FREE with advance registration only at www.fau.edu/environment; otherwise the regular prices will apply. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
