Los Angeles' new Catholic cathedral is being built to withstand a catastrophic earthquake -- even 500 years from now.

Emerging as one of California's leading examples of elaborate built-in seismic protection, the $163 million Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles is being built to keep the facility safe and operational for at least 500 years. According to the seismic designer, Nabih Youssef, "the architectural features of the building's design--exposed concrete, tall slender walls and an abundance of alabaster glass--placed exceptional demands on the structural design and construction."
