High Tech Campus Causes Sprawl

Will a new high-tech campus proposed by Cisco Systems in northern California spawn suburban sprawl, pollution and traffic?

The City of San Jose faces four lawsuits charging that theproposed Cisco Systems complex in Coyote Valley will cause habitatdamage, traffic congestion, and housing sprawl in neighboringcommunities. One of the lawsuits comes from a group of environmentalorganizations who suggests that the 20,000-worker complex would havefewer environmental impacts if it were situated downtown near housingand public transit. The City of Salinas, which has also filed suit, hasasked that San Jose subsidize affordable housing and commuter railexpansion in the region. The city is confident that the complex has beenadequately planned for and that the environmental impact report willstand up in court.
