Berkeley's environmental commission finds home fireplaces to be major polluters and may ban new fireplaces.

"Studies by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District suggest thatbetween 20 and 50 percent of air polluting particulate matter comes from home fireplaces and woodstoves." Berkeley's environmental commission may ban new fireplaces. Various other options have been proposed and residents will be asked for their comments before they go to the city council. Options range from education to "smoke police."
