A forest deal is cutting heavily into Pacific Lumber's Business in Humboldt County.

Scientists and corporate officers at Pacific Lumber's headquarters have found the maple-leaved checkerbloom, a state-designated rare and sensitive plant, which can't be disturbed by any harvesting. In the past, Pacific Lumber could argue to the state that it wasn't hurting the plant by harvesting nearby trees, but thanks to a new Headwaters Agreement, Pacific Lumber has no choice but to keep its distance. And the Headwaters Agreement is proving more costly than Pacific Lumber thought.
