Downtown is experiencing a major revival, but there is disagreement over whether it should be the cultural and historical hub of Los Angeles.

In the 1930s, downtown LA was a traditional city center. There is a concerted effort to give rebirth to that role. Advocates for the poor and homeless in the center city resent making downtown into trendy, mixed income housing. Housing for the poor and for those who work there is needed. Developers say that there is an increasing demand for downtown housing among the affluent.
