The Toronto Transit Commission's planned fare increase makes it the most expensive fare in Canada, and more than fares charged in New York, Chicago and Paris.

"Toronto Transit Commission vice-chairman Joe Mihevc went on a local Hispanic radio phone-in show recently and got an earful, he says, about the TTC's impending fare increase.

...For most of the past few years, the TTC has recovered a full 80 per cent of its operating costs through its riders' fares, a ratio that is now slipping to 78 per cent.

Montreal, with its cheap passes, relied on fares to cover only 56 per cent of its operating expenses in 2002. Chicago relied on fares for 54 per cent of its costs that year, while New York recovered 60 per cent of its costs through fares."
