A recent car-free day in Montreal offered stark contrast to business as usual, when automobile congestion, especially from suburbanites commuting to and from the island, is the norm. Building on the success of this event, a new local political party, Projet Montréal, targets automobile pollution and noise and advocates sustainable, transit-oriented urban development. The proposed solution: build new light-rail lines and encourage transit-oriented development. But will car-smitten Montrealers rise to the challenge?
