LAUSD owns 7.6 acres near Pacific Palisades worth $14 million. Taxes are $55,000 a year, but the land is rented for only $16,000 to an equestrian club. Neighbors oppose sale of the property.
A 7.6 acre site in Sullivan Canyon near Pacific Palisades was purchased by LAUSD in 1961, expecting a growth need which didn't happen. Attempts to sell have been fought by neighbors since 1982. With yearly taxes at $55,000, LAUSD is losing money by renting to a private equestrian club at $16,000. Trying to sell or lease to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has also failed. A local charter school group is working on putting a school on the site.
