"The Stanford Shopping Center—about 1.5 million square feet of selling space on 70 acres at the northwest edge of the campus—is home to all these stores and about 130 others. Since the University broke ground 50 years ago on what had once been Sen. Stanford’s vineyards, the Stanford Shopping Center has grown into one of the nation's very top-tier malls. Until last year, it was built and managed directly by the University, and, over the decades, it has produced hundreds of millions in unrestricted endowment income."
