The New River will be the subject of a clean-up effort that should deliver cleaner water to the Salton Sea in four years or less.
Human waste contamination from Mexicali, Mexico and agricultural run-off from the nearby Imperial valley have polluted the New River to the point where it carries polio, tetanus and tuberculosis. An agreement between the U.S. and Mexico to improve the Mexican sewage system, combined with a federal grant to develop artificial wetlands in Imperial County may have the pollution problem solved in as few as four years. The Salton Sea, which is fed by the New River, is expected to enjoy a significantly positive affect.
