California officials are supporting a bill to allow drivers of hybrid vehicles to travel in the state's carpool lanes--alone.

Key California government leaders, including Gov. Schwarzenneger, are backing a bill that incentivizes car buyers to consider fuel-efficient hybrids. Owners of hybrid vehicles would be allowed to use carpool lanes whether or not they were actually sharing a ride. Opponents express concern that the bill undermines traffic congestion management.
