State Transportation Agency Tackles Water Pollution

To control polluted storm water runoff, the California state transportation department has agreed to install pollution filtering devices along the coastal highway system.

In a landmark agreement, Caltrans will work to actively control storm water runoff from highways that ultimately pollutes rivers and the ocean. According to scientists, "runoff from roads, farmland, urban areas and industrial sites has emerged as the No. 1 threat to water quality in California." Filtering devices will be considered for new highways and will be retrofit, when feasible, on older freeways.
