San Francisco's Icon Ghirardelli Square Has Been Sold

Declining retails sales may lead to a change in land uses at the famous commercial complex.

Construction of Ghirardelli Square began over 110 years ago, and it has now become a historical and architectural landmark. But tenants and fans are concerned about the future of the cherished space--in response to a 22 percent office vancancy rate in the city, developers are looking to turn excess commercial space into housing or hotels.
