More Roads Increase Traffic and Pollution

A study by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group concludes that while today's automobiles are cleaner than past versions, the number of miles traveled is significantly higher. "Adding new highway capacity, as the American Highway Users Alliance and other highway interests advocate, will do little to alleviate congestion in the long run and likely will exacerbate already severe air pollution problems in metropolitan areas across the country."
