Large events featuring live music have become popular on Coachella Valley ranchos. Some locals want to create a new land use category to clarify the rules about noise generated from the events.
Riverside County, California will launch a zoning update to help quell recent controversies caused by noise complaints from live events on the “ranchos” of Coachella Valley, according to an article by Jennifer Franco for News Channel 3.
“In March, Supervisor V. Manuel Perez's office issued a press release that announced plans by Riverside County to create a new county ordinance ‘that would define Ranchos, where these are located within the Fourth District, and determine what types of activities would be allowed, to give more options beyond those that exist in the countywide temporary events and zoning ordinances,’” reports Franco.
According to the article, some owners of some ranchos have complained that local authorities have been increasing fines connected to noise violations.
The issue has been simmering since at least 2021, when News Channel 3 first reported on the potential for the county to rely on zoning to address the noise complaints.
