El Toro Airbase May Become a New Community

Southern California's former El Toro military airbase may be cleared, but not for airplanes.

Since 1993, El Toro Airbase's future has been up in the air. This week, a decision will be made by way of public vote to turn the former airbase into parks, homes, and business or allow a commercial airport into the 4,700 acre site. Mayor Larry Agran explains, "It is a really history achievement. It will transform our community, just like Central Park transformed New York City." If the development passes, "nearly 3,900 acres would be dedicated to wildlife habitat, golf courses, sports parks and other public uses, making it one of the largest park complexes in the country."
