Walking The Tightrope Between Revitalization And Gentrification
Over the years, many historic buildings in Fort Worths Near South Side have been destroyed. But thanks to urban redevelopers, a progressive city planning department and a nonprofit, member-funded redevelopment group, a minor renaissance is taking place there. The group hopes for a pedestrian-friendly, environmentally sound, urban village that preserves the best of the old, allows room for the new, and is home to people of diverse incomes and backgrounds. Sounds great but is gentrification inevitable? Some advocates are claiming that the area's working poor are "voiceless."
