Walking The Tightrope Between Revitalization And Gentrification

Over the years, many historic buildings in Fort Worth’s Near South Side have been destroyed. But “thanks to…urban redevelopers, a progressive city planning department and…a nonprofit, member-funded redevelopment group, a minor renaissance is taking place” there. The group hopes for “a pedestrian-friendly, environmentally sound, urban village that preserves the best of the old, allows room for the new, and is home to people of diverse incomes and backgrounds.” Sounds great – but is gentrification inevitable? Some advocates are claiming that the area's working poor are "voiceless."
