"Sewage treatment might seem an odd link between Pittsburgh and a handful of small villages in Slovakia, but it has emerged as a major environmental concern in both areas as people become more aware of the hazards created by poor or nonexistent treatment...Before Slovakia can become a full member of the European Union, which it is expected to join next year, it must bring treatment systems to every village with more than 2,000 residents. That means building as many as 300 treatment systems over the next 15 years."
