A new study suggests planting enough trees to cover a landmass the size of the United States.
A group of researchers in Switzerland published a study in the journal Science, arguing that the most effective way to combat the emissions that cause climate change would be to plant a trillion trees. The scientists calculate that a trillion trees could absorb 830 billion tons of carbon dioxide—as much as humans have emitted in the past 25 years.
The report also finds enough space around the planet to make room for the necessary number of trees, identifying Russia, the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, and China as the countries with the most available space.
