As government incentives for downtown development dry up, an Austin columnist concludes that smart growth is dead.

"In the end, Smart Growth passed away peacefully, and mostly unnoticed by the crowds that gathered earlier this month at City Hall. There were no tears; there were no eulogies. And a City Council that once embraced Smart Growth so warmly in its infancy, essentially ushered it out of existence with a quick, unanimous vote, preceded by little substantive discussion."
