Traffic cameras and other electronic equipment will soon monitor construction zones on Pennsylvania state roads, including the Turnpike.
Construction unions have lobbied for more than six years for state legislation authorizing the new system, Ed Blazina reports in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. According to the state Department of Transportation, there were 1,789 traffic accidents and 119 deaths in work zones between 2012 and 2017.
Starting next spring, drivers going more than 11 miles over the speed limit will be photographed and sent a notice in the mail. After a warning, repeat violators will be fined $75 and then $150. The program is authorized as a five-year test.
