A chance to participate in a lottery, which gets winners on a waitlist for federal housing assistance, pops up on the calendar as frequently as the Summer Olympics.

"For the first time in four years, the housing choice voucher program – formerly known as Section 8 – has reopened its waitlist to Austin residents in need of rental assistance," reports Syeda Hasan.
The last time Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) offered a chance to wait for housing vouchers, 20,000 people applied. According to a source at HACA, "this year’s process will be similar to the 2014 waitlist opening. HACA will select 2,000 applicants through a random lottery, and those people will be placed on the waiting list to receive a housing choice voucher."
