The funding includes nearly $13 million from a federal grant.
El Paso will modernize its transit system with a new $16 million bus maintenance facility, reports Adam Powell in El Paso Times. "The project aims to improve the reliability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability of transit operations across the region," Powell writes.
According to State Sen. Cesar Blanco, "This new facility will help ensure buses are maintained safely and operate on time, while giving transit operators the tools they need to better serve our growing community."
The need for the new facility became more urgent after a February 2025 blast damaged the maintenance bay at Sun Metro's operations center. According to an article in Hoodline, "The incident triggered a large emergency response and a cleanup and investigation that stretched on for months, exposing vulnerabilities tied to aging shop space and compressed-gas vehicle maintenance, as detailed in fire-service reports."
