The Indian Housing Block Grant program supports affordable housing efforts in Native American and Native Alaskan communities, which face some of the nation’s highest poverty rates and housing shortages.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced $794 million in federal funding for affordable housing in tribal communities via the Indian Housing Block Grant (IHBG) program. The IHBG was established as part of the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996 (NAHASDA).
The grant was awarded to more than 600 Native American and Alaskan entities. According to HUD, “The IHBG program is a formula grant that provides a range of affordable housing activities on reservations and related areas. Eligible activities include housing development, operation and modernization of existing housing, housing services to eligible families and individuals, crime prevention and safety, and model activities that provide creative approaches to solving affordable housing challenges.”
