The Director of the Department of Planning and Zoning provides overall leadership and strategic direction for the City’s land use planning and redevelopment processes. Reporting to a Deputy City Manager, the Director organizes and directs the review of development proposals, citywide and small area plan development, historic preservation, zoning administration and inspection, demographics/census analysis, as well as special studies on issues such green building policies, public school enrollment projections.

The ideal candidate is a dynamic and ethical leader with significant experience in city planning at a supervisory level. Proven ability to manage complex urban redevelopment projects and proactively engage diverse communities is essential. This individual has a track record of success in navigating high-profile, controversial, or complex planning issues. They possess excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to balance diverse stakeholder interests while upholding Alexandria’s values of equity and inclusion. They thrive under public scrutiny while maintaining transparency and professionalism, leverage strong interpersonal skills to build consensus across diverse audiences, exhibit a deep understanding of land use trends and the economic implications of planning decisions, and prioritize innovation and adaptability in a rapidly evolving planning environment.
