International celebrations commence June 3.
Cyclists rejoice: The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution declaring a new holiday, World Bicycle Day, to be celebrated June 3 every year. And with that, "the worldwide promotion of cycling has entered an all new phase," according to trade journal Bike Europe.
"The declaration encourages Member States to devote particular attention to the bicycle in cross-cutting development strategies and to include the bicycle in international, regional, national and subnational development policies and programs," writer Jan-Willem van Schaik reports.
Two international organizations, the World Cycling Alliance and the European Cyclists' Federation, have campaigned for several years to create the holiday. In 2015, they delivered a report to the U.N. outlining how cycling promotes the global Sustainable Development Goals.
