"The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine confirmed that the Interior Department told the sciences advisory group to stop work on the study during a budget review," James Bruggers reports in the Courier Journal. The decision was criticized by officials within the Academies of Sciences, who emphasized the importance of the work.
The study that focused on Appalachian coal mines examined the health effects of people who live and work around strip mines. For their part, the mining industry had complained that some of the academies' studies were biased.
