"Bostonians are die-hard conservatives when it comes to architecture...when you take the Boston skyline as a whole, it's depressing. There was a whole generation of dumb boxes that look like the upended packing crates the real buildings were shipped in... More and more, we please ourselves by copying the past. Take a walk through an older neighborhood like the South End. You'll see brand-new buildings with red-brick walls and sloping mansard roofs. Such buildings are deliberate imitations of the architecture of a century and a half ago. The imitations aren't usually convincing. "
