"It finally sank in that if there's a contest between charm and convenience, I was coming round to the American view: Quaint's what you want on vacation, but modern's where you want to live...What unsettled me about the Cotswolds, I now realized, was that the undeniable beauty of the area derives from a profound resistance to change, or at least to change that isn't in keeping with history and tradition...I offer strip malls and shopping plazas as ultimate expressions of the thoroughly admirable American devotion to transience."
