Outgoing Governor Ushers In New Coastal Protections

"The new law is meant to prevent destruction of wetlands and preserve water quality at Maryland's five bays along the Atlantic Ocean. Glendening (D) also signed into law protections for the Chesapeake Bay, meant to ensure that development along the waterfront doesn't harm the waters. The provisions restore the original intent of Maryland's laws protecting the bay that had been undermined by several court rulings." The bill signing marked a final opportunity to influence legistation as the governor prepares to leave office. Gov. Glendening has been most notable in his efforts to limit suburban sprawl.
