Create Incentives For Infill Development

Housing and commercial development near mass transit is sensible, but California must create incentives to encourage it.

This editorial notes that building housing and commercial development near mass transit is sensible. It reduces pollution and traffic congestion. Unfortunately, efforts are hindered by "shortsighted regulation aimed at preventing traffic" near the transit hubs. SB 1636 would correct that, according to the editorial, by setting aside "level-of-service" standards in the newly defined "infill opportunity zones," in favor of a reasonable effort to lessen regional traffic congestion. This could spark more building of affordable housing nearby high-volume mass transit, giving the highways a needed break.
