Philadelphia was the first planned city in the New World, meticulously laid out by William Penn as a "greene countrie towne."...[But] since the middle of the last century, this region has often ignored the wise lessons it was taught by the likes of William Penn, Frederic Law Olmsted (Fairmount Park) and even William Levitt (whose massive developments, while flawed, at least sought to knit together houses, parks, schools and shops)."
