Even for more seasoned bicyclists, cycling in winter can pose many problems. The winter-minded city of Montreal, however, is attempting to improve the condition of winter cycling in an effort to improve the city’s sustainability.
Devon Paige Willis raises the question of how cold-weather cities can increase one of the most environmentally sustainable modes of transportation during the adverse conditions of the winter months. Cycling in snowy cities like Montreal decreases drastically in the winter. The city of Montreal, however, has drafted a new transportation plan that will seek to increase biking in winter, including establishing a “white network” of bike routes that will be kept clear throughout the year. And a new campaign led by Environnement Jeunnesse, a Quebec environmental not-for-profit group, includes videos about dressing for winter cycling, winter bicycle maintenance, and cycling traffic safety advice.
