Amtrak Could Face Private Competition

A plan by the Amtrak Reform Council recommends opening up Amtrak routes to private competition.

"Amtrak routes could be opened to private competition under a proposal approved on Friday by an oversight board that will recommend that option to Congress next month.Under the plan hammered out by the Amtrak Reform Council, the railroad would continue to run trains under oversight of a new government corporation during a two- or three-year transition period."
