"[O]ur rail systems are mostly designed for commuters, not travelers. Unlike railroads in Europe, ours usually lack links to integrate them seamlessly into the national and global air traffic networks, which will obviously remain the basic transportation system for trips of more than about 300 miles.Some planners in the United States, though, are beginning to see the light."
