Because "smart growth" defies an easy definition, it's being applied to all sorts of growth. And much of it may not be smart.

"People living in areas targeted for new high-rise, high-density developments are often labeled "NIMBYS," as in "not in my back yard," for demanding community control over planning. It's easy to put a smart-growth spin on all sorts of projects. Most residents who find massive developments circling their homes and destroying their quality of life feel powerless in the path of this runaway train known as smart growth."
