Point/Counterpoint: The Future of Southern California Goods Movement: Will We Survive or Thrive in 2025?
California State University Long Beach, Center for International Trade and Transportation (CITT)
The Center for International Trade and Transportation's signature event is a Point/Counterpoint dialogue on trade issues. It is an educational forum in which different perspectives on a pertinent issue of interest are presented. The format allows for a comprehensive in-depth treatment of a topic in a neutral setting. It will be an informative and lively exchange of information, all done in the spirit of education. The objective is to understand fully the facts and various perspectives on the topic in an educational, neutral format and to allow the audience to further explore the topic through question and answer.
In light of the projected growth of containerized freight at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to more than double by 2025 to 25 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), this year's Point/Counterpoint question is: "Are we ready or not ready to accommodate the projected growth?"
To set the stage, the forum will open with a video featuring fictitious and extreme scenarios that provide two visions: (1) an overly positive view of the goods movement in the year 2025, assuming all stakeholders cooperated extremely well in the political, legal, environmental, and logistical arenas; and (2) an overly negative view assuming that things went badly in all the aforementioned arenas.
The program will continue with a panel discussion about which alternative future is likely to occur.
