Vicky Plestis reports that Manhattan's South Street Seaport, long criticized for failing to live up to its potential, is being rethought and redesigned by its developers.
Howard Hughes Corp., the current leaseholder on Pier 17, is preparing concepts for more development for the area, particularly retail.
But, Plestis writes, "...many local community groups oppose the massive commercialization of the South Street Seaport, which they think detracts from the area's rich history as one of New York's oldest district."
Preserving the character and historic buildings of the area are front and center with local advocates, according to the article.
