Mexico Seeks To Balance Tourism And Environment

Tourism is an important industry in Mexico but rapid tourism-related growth without proper planning has resulted in environmental damage. New mega-projects aim to address environmental concerns.

"President Fox and the chief of his National Tourism Development Fund, John McCarthy, have at least three tourism megaprojects in mind. On paper, the projects look well planned. They also look pretty big. They may attract millions of dollars, but will they litter the landscape?...uncontrolled growth has not often enriched the poor or ennobled the environment...'We want to make sure...that growth and economic development to do not destroy the nation's beauty and natural resources.'"
