Vote nears on proposals to turn Somerville, MA, "wasteland" into "urban village."
City officials in Somerville, Massachusetts, have offered up a nine-acre parcel located in a formerly industrial district for redevelopment with a rapid transit station, new open space, office space, housing, and street level retail space. Two development teams have responded with strong proposals for the site. City officials expect to make a decision next month on which team will be sold the parcel. "city officials - and even their critics - say the oval-shaped parcel along the Mystic River has the potential to transcend all that and give the city much-needed commercial tax revenue and, they hope, an MBTA stop along the Orange Line, which today passes through the area without even slowing down."
