"The cars of the future are here now, raring to go -- cars with tremendous fuel economy and excellent performance, cars that produce little more in the way of emissions than a dyspeptic cow. For proof, just glance under the hood of the Chevy Suburban "hybrid" electric truck designed by engineers at the University of California at Davis. It won this year's intercollegiate "FutureTruck" competition, sponsored annually by the U.S. Department of Energy and General Motors. So what's keeping cars like UC Davis' Suburban off the highways? A failure of political will and corporate commitment, proponents of the technology say."
