Advisory Council Member - Bay Area Air Quality Mgmt. Dist., SF CA

Bay Area Air Quality Management District

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (Air District) is a regional government agency located in San Francisco California, committed to achieving clean air to protect the public's health and the environment. The Air District accomplishes this goal through regulation of industrial facilities and various outreach and incentive programs designed to encourage clean air choices.

The Air District's jurisdiction encompasses all of seven counties - Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Napa, and portions of two others - southwestern Solano and southern Sonoma.

The Air District is currently accepting applications for an appointment to the Air District's Advisory Council.

ABOUT THE ADVISORY COUNCIL
The purpose of the Advisory Council (Council) is to advise and consult with the Board of Directors (Board) and the Executive Officer/Air Pollution Control Officer on issues related to air pollution emissions control, health and the environment. This includes studying and making recommendations on specific matters referred to the Council from the Board or the Executive Committee of the Board, including the technical, social, economic, environmental and fiscal aspects of matters being addressed by the Air District. The Council also may identify areas of interest for exploration and study.

The Council consists of 20 members who live in the Bay Area and bring a variety of backgrounds and areas of expertise to the discussion of air quality issues. The 20 members must include at least four representatives of private organizations active in conservation or protection of the environment within the Air District's jurisdiction, at least three representatives of public health agencies, at least one representative of colleges or universities in the state and at least one representative of each of the following groups within the Air District's jurisdiction: agriculture, architects, community planning, general contractors, industry, organized labor, public mass transportation system, park and recreation commissions or equivalent agencies of any city, regional park district, registered professional engineers, and transportation. Currently, we are recruiting for a representative from the Community Planning or Architect fields. This vacancy is for a two year term, beginning in January, 2011.

ABOUT THE COMMITMENT
These are volunteer positions. There is no salary. Members of the Council are reimbursed for actual and necessary expenses incurred by them in attending meetings of the Council and meetings and public hearings conducted by the Board.

Council members serve a term of two years and may be reappointed to a maximum of twelve consecutive years. The Council meets as a full group up to ten (10) times each year, including a retreat to consider topics for up to four (4) symposia to be conducted throughout the year. Each symposium is followed by a meeting to discuss the materials presented and agree upon a report to be submitted for the Board's consideration. The Council will assign lead member(s) to prepare reports from each symposium. The Council meets at the Air District's offices at 939 Ellis Street in San Francisco, near City Hall.
