In terms of smog, metropolitan Los Angeles is still the worst city in the United States. In fact, all 10 of the smoggiest counties are in California, according to an annual report from the American Lung Association.
Margot Roosevelt writes, "The report found that high air pollution levels threaten the health of 175 million people, about 58% of the population. But in California, the proportion is far higher: 91% of state residents, more than 33 million people, live in counties with poor air quality, especially in Southern California and the Central Valley."
The results may influence opinion on an upcoming ballot initiative sponsored by oil companies that is proposing a freeze on California's climate law because of the recession.
