Peru Creates A New National Park

"Acting Peruvian President Valentin Paniagua signed a law creating a new Cordillera Azul National Park. The park includes a 5,000-square-mile wilderness virtually uninhabited, untouched and unstudied, and isolated by steep mountain escarpments... 'The idea,' said Thomas Schulenberg, a Field Museum ornithologist, "is to amass relevant data very quickly when an environment seems threatened. You have to prove something is worth saving, so you need good information, and that is not always available in Third World countries where conservationists struggle for funding.''
